Ideokinesis is a word created from the Greek ideo, which means “idea,” and kinesis, which means “motion.” Ideokinesis is a technique to reeducate the neuromuscular system by using mental imagery to alter movement patterns.

Lulu E. Sweigard, Ph.D., created ideokinesis based on her work as a dance teacher. The focus of her technique is the idea that the nervous system is responsible for coordinating all musculoskeletal movement and postures; therefore, people who want to change their postures or how they move must first consciously change their neurological activity. Sweigard also believed that many of the aches and pains people experience are the result of an imbalance in muscle strength and how they use their muscles. To correct this she asked people to picture “lines of movement” traveling throughout the body and then used this concept to help them balance their muscle activity and centers of gravity. This approach allows people to teach or train their nervous systems to stimulate or move muscles in a proper, more balanced way.

Ideokinesis is a nonstrenuous tool that allows people to reeducate their muscles and movement patterns. Sweigard stressed that people need to have an understanding of anatomy and biomechanics in order for the technique to work well. Dr. Sweigard did not establish a school or formally train teachers in her technique; however, many individuals who teach dance or movement use ideokinesis.
